Voice + Swallowing Center

Finding the treatment that’s best for you

At the Voice and Swallowing Center at Tufts Medical Center in downtown Boston, we offer comprehensive, expert care for disorders of the larynx, related to both voice and swallowing. We bring a deep level of understanding to the table when it comes to voice and swallowing issues.

Often a conservative approach, such as voice therapy, can help reverse problems. If progress isn’t forthcoming, other options, such as office based injections to plump up a weak vocal cord and office based laser therapy are also available – some of the many, cutting-edge, in-office procedures we offer.

If surgery is needed, we offer some of the latest techniques as well, including operative microlaryngeal phonosurgery and laryngeal framework surgery. And the voice center team is well-equipped to help you with swallowing issues, which can arise after a stroke or cancer treatment.

Other conditions we treat include:

  • Acid or non-acid reflux disease
  • Vocal cord paralysis and paresis
  • Laryngeal papillomatosis (recurrent respiratory papillomatosis or RRP)
  • Early vocal cord cancers (focusing both on treatment and voice preservation)
  • Vocal fatigue
  • Breathing problems related to narrowing of the voice box and upper trachea
  • Laryngeal trauma

In-office treatments for voice and swallowing problems

We offer a range of in-office procedures, including:

  • Laryngovideostroboscopy
  • Vocal cord injections for vocal cord paralysis
  • Trans-oral biopsies of vocal cord lesions
  • Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing
  • Biopsies of vocal cord lesions
