Gastroenterology

General Gastroenterology Program

The Gastroenterology/Hepatology Division at Tufts Medical Center in downtown Boston includes a strong team of sub-specialists who have the versatility to address a variety of general gastroenterology symptoms and diseases.

Each of our doctors is experienced in diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal and liver problems such as:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Hepatitis B and hepatitis C
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Motility disorders
  • Primary biliary cirrhosis
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • Abdominal pain
  • Celiac disease
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Dyspepsia
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Eosinophilic gastroenteritis
  • Food allergies

In most cases, our doctors will have the expertise to manage your care on their own. They'll also have the background to recognize and treat any other gastrointestinal issues you're experiencing. As a result, you'll enjoy the convenience of seeing one specialist for multiple illnesses.

Sometimes, however, patients face more-complex gastrointestinal disorders. In these cases, your doctor can consult with division colleagues who specialize in managing inflammatory bowel disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, liver diseases, biliary pancreatic diseases and other conditions. If you have an especially complicated case, we may have the appropriate specialist take over your care.

What does our balance of generalized and specialized expertise mean for you? You'll receive care that is individualized to your particular situation and gives you the best chance at a healthier future.

Which treatment option makes sense for you?

All standard diagnostic services are available through our program, including:

  • Colonoscopy
  • Endoscopy
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram (ERCP)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Esophageal manometry
  • Video capsule endoscopy
  • Radiology, breath and laboratory tests

Treatments for gastrointestinal disorders can take a variety of forms, including medications, behavioral changes and dietary changes. We understand that every patient is different and will create a unique treatment plan to address your specific needs and circumstances. Where appropriate, we work with dietitians, colorectal surgeons, infectious disease specialists and other Tufts MC colleagues in developing and managing your plan.

Ultimately, our goal is to resolve your gastrointestinal problem and return you to the care of your local doctor as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you can count on expert care from a compassionate team dedicated to helping you get better.
