Since our founding in the 1960s, our division has earned recognition for excellence in patient care and research. We first became widely known for the management of primary biliary cirrhosis and sclerosing cholangitis in the 1970s. The following decade, we became one of the first awardees of a National Institutes of Health grant that sparked groundbreaking research into digestive diseases at Tufts MC and affiliated entities.

At the Gastroenterology/Hepatology Division, we apply a personal touch to patient care. We get to know each patient by name and strive to ensure you never feel rushed during visits. Understanding you lead a busy life, we aim to set up appointments promptly while minimizing disruptions to your personal and work schedules.
If you have a gastrointestinal or liver problem, you can rest assured that we offer the latest in diagnostic testing. At our state-of-the-art Endoscopy Suite, we perform procedures including colonoscopies, upper gastrointestinal endoscopies and endoscopic ultrasounds. We can also call on the expertise of Tufts MC interventional radiologists and gastrointestinal pathologists. Our diagnostic capabilities help your care team to determine the appropriate treatment plan in a timely manner.
Our division provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient therapies and treatments for everything from basic to very complex gastrointestinal disorders and liver diseases. Where necessary, we work with dietitians, colorectal surgeons, infectious disease specialists and other Tufts MC colleagues in managing your care. In addition, we're one of the few hospitals with a unit exclusively for patients with gastrointestinal disorders and staffed by doctors and nurses with subspecialty expertise in these conditions.
Research & Training Activities
As was the case five decades ago, the Gastroenterology/Hepatology Division has a strong research focus. Many of our faculty members are active in basic, clinical and/or translational research in areas such as inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology and allergies. Patients under our care may have the opportunity to take part in clinical trials of promising new therapies.
Our division runs the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program, which trains individuals for clinical practice or an academic career in the field of gastroenterology or hepatology. Fellows gain extensive experience in the management of acute gastrointestinal bleeding, acute and chronic gastrointestinal diseases, liver disease and endoscopy. As part of our educational mission, we also train residents, postdoctoral research fellows and medical students.
