Ours is one of the country's few programs with extensive experience in managing hepatitis B, PBC and PSC. Given our location in Boston's Chinatown, we place a strong emphasis on patient education, community outreach and medical care for patients with chronic hepatitis B, which disproportionately affects Asian Americans.
A long history, a bright future
Under the leadership of the late Marshall Kaplan, MD, the Tufts MC Gastroenterology/Hepatology Division became widely known for the management of PBC and PSC in the 1970s. Dr. Kaplan's legacy lives on, as he trained many of the gastroenterologists and hepatologists at Tufts MC today (including both of our program's doctors).
The Liver Disease Center team, including Kathleen Viveiros, MD, see patients with the full spectrum of chronic liver disease.
Our providers are well-known for their expertise in caring for patients with liver disease. Dr. Viveiros has a special interest in PBC, PSC and fatty liver disease. She completed her fellowship training at the University of California, San Diego, which included participation in the Clinical Research Enhancement through Supplemental Training (CREST) Program and clinical research in fatty liver disease. At Tufts MC, Dr. Viveiros is devoted to training future specialists as the Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program and educating patients on the benefits of making dietary and lifestyle changes.
Both of our program's doctors stay on the cutting edge of medicine by participating in clinical trials of medications for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and other chronic liver diseases. This is important, as new treatments are emerging all the time. As a patient in our care, you may have the opportunity to enroll in a trial that could help improve your health.
At the Center for Liver Disease, we often coordinate the efforts of many different physicians to care for patients. Tufts MC specialists in radiology, pathology and endoscopy are available to assist our doctors in making a diagnosis. Depending on your situation, we may refer you to colleagues in nutrition or psychiatry to help with treatment. Or, we may call on the expertise of medical oncologists, interventional radiologists and hepatobiliary surgeons at the Tufts MC Liver Tumor Program.
Chronic liver disease is a long-term battle. But at the Center for Liver Disease, we're here for our patients, every step of the way.
We're dedicated to creating and maintaining strong relationships with referring physicians. Once your patient is in our care, we work hard to make sure he or she is comfortable and has the best experience possible. When it’s time for the patient to return to your care, we make the transition smooth and seamless.
