Coordinated care for patients with HIV and Hepatitis C
If you are an HIV patient infected with the hepatitis C virus, you face additional complications as the two conditions and their treatments interact. The physicians at the Co-Infection Clinic at Tufts Medical Center have the experience and expertise to effectively manage the long-term treatments needed for both diseases.
This clinic, one of the first of its kind in the country, was developed so that we can provide you with care for both diseases in one location at the same time. This is not only more convenient for you but also allows us to provide you with better care because we can take a more comprehensive and coordinated approach.
The care you need
The combination of treating HIV and Hepatitis C can be complex because of the potential for drug interactions and overlapping toxicities. Because we treat both at the Co-Infection Clinic, we are able to more closely monitor which medications you are taking and develop an individualized plan based on your specific needs.
As a world class academic medical center, we are able to offer the newest therapies available. These are treatments that have been shown to be more effective and have a higher cure rate.
Your care will be provided by doctors who are leaders in the field having developed effective treatment programs for patients in many different settings. They have extensive experience in working with patients who have multiple infections.
What should I expect?
You will find all of the services you need in once place including all of the diagnostic tests and treatments.
By offering our services in a dedicated clinic, we are able to more quickly get to know you and help you feel comfortable with your therapies. This is important because the treatment of Hepatitis C can take up to a year. Throughout this time, we will work closely with you, monitoring your progress and ensuring that the medications are working the way they should while minimizing the side effects as much as possible.
We will also help to ensure the continuity of your care by working with your other providers. We will share with them information about the services we have provided and our ongoing recommendations.
While you are going through treatment, we will help you navigate the complex insurance issues you may face for the treatment of both diseases.
When you come to the co-infection clinic, you can be assured that you will be treated with respect and that we will maintain your privacy while your receive the best care available.
We value the relationship that referring physicians have with their patients and we will work closely with you to ensure that your patients have coordinated care. We will provide you with a written report generally within 72 hours of seeing a patient you have referred to us.
