Drs. Gretchen Volpe, Natalie Nierenberg, Cheleste Thorpe, Debra Poutsiaka, and Helen Boucher have traveled several dozen times to l’Hôpital Sacré Coeur in Haiti as medical volunteer staff. They saw patients during the cholera outbreak after the earthquake and used that time as an opportunity to teach about infection control. They also taught weeklong courses on infection control as well as virtual lectures following the visit on topics such as tuberculosis and parasitic helminthes.
L’Hôpital Sacré Coeur is a premier health facility in Milot, Haiti run by the CRUDEM Foundation (Center for Rural Development of Milot). It was founded in 1986 to providing adequate healthcare services to people living in the area. The hospital has expanded over the years through volunteer mission visits.
