The Nutrition and Cardiovascular Risk in HIV Research Program at Tufts Medical Center is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our research has been following HIV infected adults since 1995 to understand the nutritional and metabolic impact of HIV, as well as the role of HIV and those metabolic consequences on the risk for cardiovascular disease in HIV infected individuals.
The cohort studies have also been refined to assess the factors associated with abnormal surrogate markers of cardiovascular disease in HIV over time. Demonstration of the significant role of dyslipidemia as a risk for abnormal surrogate markers of cardiovascular disease in HIV has lead to the development of intervention studies also funded by NIH Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
The HIV and Nutrition research program has achieved international recognition, as Christine Wanke, MD was recruited by the World Health Organization to develop the first Nutrition and HIV Guidelines for people living with HIV.
