The Inker Family Fund

The Inker Family Fund was created in 2010 through the generosity of Lesley Inker, MD and Ben Inker, in honor of their wedding on January 16, 2011. The Inker Family Fund is under the direction of the Chief of the Division of Nephrology, with an initial goal to provide direct support to kidney patients, whether they are in the Kidney Transplant Program; receiving dialysis through the independent Dialysis Clinic, Inc. (DCI) or another dialysis provider; or receiving any type of treatment for kidney disease.

A committee comprised of Dr. Perrone, Kathleen Murray, MSW (dialysis social worker), Katie Saunders, MSW (transplant social worker) and Linda Mazzola, RN (pediatric nephrology nurse) has the discretion to easily meet patient needs based on the Inker Family Fund criteria. Funds are available to provide emergency support to patients with kidney disease for which there are no other sources of support.

We are extremely honored by the following Founding Gifts to the Inker Family Fund:

A number of Division members have donated to the Inker Fund via Tufts Medical Center’s I Care Campaign.

The following are examples of basic necessities that have been provided by the Inker Family Fund in 2012:

  • Winter coats, shoes, and other clothing necessities
  • Utility payments (e.g., gas, electric, oil) and rent
  • Medical and insurance co-payments and uncovered dental expenses
  • Grocery store gift cards
  • Medical devices (e.g., blood pressure cuffs) not covered by insurance

The following are examples of the more extraordinary disbursements in 2012:

  • Dental work for transplant patients who have no insurance.
  • Support for a donor who was recently laid off and still wanted to donate (thus delaying her ability to look for a job).
  • A plane ticket for a person donating who could not otherwise afford to come.
  • Paying an insurance premium for a newly transplanted patient so they could keep their medical insurance.
  • Student loan payment.
