Labor and Delivery at Tufts MC

Expert Care, Personalized Attention

Every pregnant woman is different. At Tufts Medical Center, we do everything we can to help ensure that your pregnancy and giving birth are as safe, comfortable and memorable as possible—keeping your individual needs in mind every step of the way.

Our highly skilled staff of obstetricians and nurses and small provider-to-patient ratio allows us to provide you with personalized attention in a friendly, comfortable environment. With just seven private rooms in our Labor & Delivery Unit, we can focus directly on you and your baby when it matters most.

But don’t let our size fool you: from our multidisciplinary team of experienced doctors and nurses, to our advanced equipment, to our outstanding family resources and support, we’re a top childbirth choice for women throughout Eastern Massachusetts. In fact, we believe so strongly in our Maternity Services that many of our doctors have had their own babies at Tufts Medical Center.

State-of-the-Art Services

Our sophisticated approach to pregnancy begins in our Women’s Care program, where you’ll receive the highest level of gynecological and obstetrical care, including Level 2 ultrasound, which provides the most detailed look at a growing fetus.

For women with high-risk pregnancies, our Maternal-Fetal Medicine program offers a full range of diagnostic procedures, such as:

  • routine and targeted sonographic examination
  • amniocentesis
  • chronic villus sampling and fetal blood sampling
  • genetic testing and counseling when recommended

If you or your baby needs additional attention during or after delivery, our physicians also have ready access to expert neonatologists in Tufts Medical Center’s highly respected Level-3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). All of these services are located just steps from each other, so you can trust that you and your baby are always in the best hands.

Bonding with Your Baby

Exceptional care doesn’t end after delivery. Our goal is always to keep moms and babies together, so you can begin to bond as soon as possible. That starts even before you take your infant home: With 21 private Mother-Infant rooms, your baby can stay with you, 24 hours a day.

Whether you’re a first-time mom or a seasoned pro, there’s always something new to learn about parenthood. That’s why our nurses and support staff work with you and your family to get accustomed to your new baby by offering education, classes, and even lactation consultants to help teach about breastfeeding.

Even after you take your child home, we’re here for you. A registered nurse is available to provide round-the-clock telephone support, every day of the year. We even offer online photographs of newborns, so you can announce the birth of a child to web-connected friends and family at no cost.

Each labor and delivery room is designed for comfort, safety and support while you are in labor.

Comfortable—and Sophisticated

Where you choose to have your baby is just as important as who you choose to be your obstetrician. At Tufts Medical Center, we want you to feel as comfortable as you would at home, in a state-of-the-art setting.

Our Labor & Delivery Unit has seven private rooms to accommodate laboring women and their families. Each room has a specially designed hospital bed, which converts to a labor bed, allowing you to both labor and deliver in the same room. All rooms also include a private bathroom, sleeping chair and television, as well as sophisticated monitoring equipment and a newborn care area, to help welcome your baby into the world.

In the case of multiple pregnancies or the need for Cesarean section, two fully stocked operating rooms are available in the Labor & Delivery Unit.  Just a short walk down the hall, the operating rooms allow for quick action if needed. Anesthesia services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and include narcotics, spinal, and epidural. Pediatric services are also available around the clock, ensuring your new baby is examined quickly.

Something for Everyone

If you have medical or pregnancy-related complications and must be hospitalized, our Maternal Special Care Unit is available to you. Staffed by nurses and physicians who are specially trained to give the highest level of care, the Unit includes eight private rooms with all the same benefits of those in our Labor & Delivery Unit.

During a stay on the MSCU, you and your family can take part in classes, including Bed Rest Support and Breastfeeding Preparedness.

Keeping Moms and Babies Together

We want you and your baby to start bonding as soon as possible. Our Mother-Infant Unit has 21 private and two semi-private rooms that allow newborns to stay their mothers, 24 hours a day. Each room has a bathroom with shower, rocking chair, sleeping chair and a television featuring the Newborn Channel, an information service that covers topics including newborn care, breastfeeding and postpartum care. Both you and your baby can be examined in the room, ensuring privacy and a family-centered environment.
