Preparing for Pregnancy

Beginning your journey

The decision to have a baby is one of the biggest decisions you may ever make. You want to be sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible, from conception to delivery. At Tufts Medical Center, we’re here to help you plan your pregnancy, every step of the way.

We encourage you to first meet with your gynecologist or primary care physician to discuss pregnancy and anything you might need to do to prepare, such as losing weight or quitting smoking. If you have failed to conceive after 6 months to a year of trying, your doctor may refer you and your partner to our Center for Reproduction and Infertility, where our skilled physicians and nurses provide the full range of testing and treatment services for infertility and related issues.

Choosing the right doctor for you

Once you’re pregnant, you’ll be faced with plenty of choices: baby names, nursery paint colors, cloth or disposable diapers. Choosing your obstetrician is even more important.

At Tufts Medical Center’s Women’s Care, our obstetricians enjoy getting to know mothers-to-be and providing information and support throughout your pregnancy. We start by providing your first appointment within a week of your first call to us.

We have male and female physicians, as well as physicians fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese. In fact, we believe so strongly in our Maternity Services that many of our doctors have had their own babies at Tufts.

The resources you need

Most pregnancies are free of complications. However, if you find yourself dealing with a high-risk pregnancy because of a coexisting medical problem, obstetrical complication, fetal abnormality or other concern, the experienced doctors, nurses and support staff in our Maternal-Fetal Medicine program can help.

Because the program is staffed by a large group of board-certified physicians and skilled nurses with broad experience in all areas of perinatal diagnosis and management, you can feel confident that you will receive the highest level of specialized attention throughout your pregnancy.

The program also offers comprehensive genetic testing and counseling to women for whom it is recommended. Whatever your concern, you can feel confident that Tufts Medical Center has the services you need throughout your pregnancy.
