Hand + Upper Extremity Program

Entrust your care to Boston’s leading specialists

If you suffer from a painful or debilitating hand or arm problem, the Hand and Upper Extremity Program at Tufts Medical Center in downtown Boston can help. Here, you will be treated by orthopedic surgeons who have devoted their careers, training and research to the treatment of arms, elbows, hands, wrists and fingers.

Our program chief, Charles Cassidy, MD, has treated thousands of patients with the most complicated hand and arm injuries and disorders for two decades. His peers rank him among the top one percent of doctors in the country in the hand and upper extremity specialty, according to US News and World Report.

Dr. Cassidy also chairs the Hand Fellowship Program at Tufts Medical Center, where he trains tomorrow’s leaders in this highly specialized field. Dr. Cassidy is also entrusted with treating the most delicate of patients: he has performed hundreds of hand and arm reconstructions for infants born with deformities, helping them to develop into active and healthy children.

Dr. Cassidy is joined by Jennifer Hoffman, MD, an expert hand and upper extremity surgeon who is deeply experienced in hand and upper extremity reconstruction and performs hundreds of procedures annually.

We treat the full range of hand and arm problems

We treat hand and upper extremity problems from congenital malformations (disorders present a birth) to conditions caused by trauma and overuse, including:

  • Fractures
  • Peripheral nerve disorders (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Injuries to tendons, ligaments and other soft-tissue
  • Sports injuries (e.g., tennis elbow)
  • Arthritis
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Tumors of the hand, wrist, forearm and elbow
  • Detached fingers, hands and elbows

You will get to know your orthopedic hand surgeon

When you come to our program, either Dr. Cassidy or Dr. Hoffman will evaluate, diagnose and treat you. And should you need surgery, Dr. Cassidy or Dr. Hoffman will perform your procedure. Few major medical centers assure an attending (supervising) physician will be your surgeon.

We offer complete hand and upper extremity care

If you have multiple or interrelated conditions, we may collaborate with experienced surgeons from our other orthopedic specialties, such as:

If you have had hand or elbow surgery, we’ll refer you to the Hand Therapy Clinic , located right in our office space. The clinic’s certified hand therapist and occupational therapists will help get you on the path to recovery in the days following surgery when rehabilitation is critical to regaining your normal function.

All of these resources for hands and upper extremities at one location are rare, even in a hub of medical excellence like Boston.
