Interstitial Lung Disease Treatment at Tufts MC

Interstitial lung diseases (ILD) is an umbrella term for a large group of diseases that cause inflammation and scarring in the lungs.  As a result, the lungs aren’t able to take in oxygen. Sometimes referred to as lung fibrosis or interstitial pneumonia, ILD can cause severe complications if left untreated.

The Interstitial Lung Disease Program at Tufts MC provides extensive diagnostic testing and highly specialized care for patients with ILD:

Conditions treated include:

  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
  • Interstitial lung diseases related to tobacco use, environmental and occupational toxins
  • Interstitial lung disease related to infections such as COVID-19
  • Hypersensitivity pneumonitis
  • Interstitial lung diseases related to connective tissue diseases such as:
  • Lymphangioleiomyomatosis
  • Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis
  • Sarcoidosis

At Tufts MC, we have a multidisciplinary approach for the diagnosis and treatment of ILD. Patient cases are reviewed by specialists in the departments of pulmonology, rheumatology, thoracic surgery, radiology, and pulmonary pathology. Our team is dedicated to performing the most up-to-date procedures and use a minimally invasive approach whenever possible, avoiding unnecessary surgeries.

What are the symptoms of ILD?

The most common symptoms of ILD include:

  • Shortness of breath at rest or with exercise
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

What are the causes of ILD?

  • Smoking
  • Environmental or occupational exposures
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Family history

If you have any of the above symptoms, you might have one of the many conditions described as interstitial lung disease.
