Medical Intensive Care Unit

Round-the-clock care for those who need it most

You may not think about intensive care until your loved one requires it. But you can rest assured that this need is foremost on the minds of the specialized group of doctors, nurses and support staff at Tufts Medical Center’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). Our team works together to provide ongoing care to the most critically ill and medically complex patients.

The 10-bed MICU offers round-the-clock monitoring and the latest in state-of-the-art approaches, including mechanical ventilation, continuous hemodialysis, specialized endoscopy and other support measures, so you can feel confident that your loved one is receiving the best available treatment.

A team approach to serious illness

Exceptional critical care requires an exceptional team. At the Tufts Medical Center MICU, board-certified pulmonary and critical care physicians lead a multidisciplinary group that includes highly trained critical care nurses, fellows and residents, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, nutritionists, pharmacists and social workers. We work together to determine the most appropriate care for your loved one—keeping you in the loop as we do so.

Our staff is experienced in caring for patients with a broad range of illnesses, including sepsis and septic shock and respiratory failure due to pneumonia, asthma, COPD and acute respiratory distress. This depth and breadth of expertise has made our MICU a regional referral center for critically ill patients.

Putting families first

We believe that critical care shouldn’t just be about monitoring and treating illness. It should also be about building a personal connection with patients and their families. With a patient-to-nurse ratio of just 2 to 1, our nursing staff is able to provide constant care to your loved one—and to help keep the entire family at the center of everything we do. Whether you want an update on your loved one’s condition or have a question about treatment, we do our best to address your concerns. In fact, our goal is to empower you to become a partner in his or her care. We know that you see your loved one as a person, not an illness—and so do we.
