The Division of Breast Imaging & Intervention at Tufts Medical Center specializes in screening for, detecting and, in some cases, treating breast cancer. Our goal is to diagnose breast cancer early, ensuring you receive the timeliest and most effective treatment possible.
We have on hand the latest technology along with an experienced, proven team that treats every patient like family. Recognizing the anxiety that breast problems can cause, we strive to give you the results of your tests quickly.

Screening involves checking for signs of cancer in people who show no symptoms. Our division offers screening mammograms, which are common for women aged 40 years or older (and for women younger than 40 who have a family history of breast cancer).
We also perform screening MRI scans for patients with high risk for developing breast carcinoma based on genetic testing and/or family history. Based on your results, we can schedule you for a biopsy with minimal waiting time.
Diagnostic tests help us to further evaluate abnormalities seen on the screening tests, decide whether further intervention is needed and determine the stage of breast cancer. The following tests are noninvasive, meaning there is no incision made or instrument inserted:

At Breast Imaging & Intervention, we offer ultrasound-guided brachytherapy to treat certain cases of breast cancer. This advanced form of radiation therapy — administered by a team including a radiologist, surgeon and radiation oncologist — involves planting tiny radioactive seeds directly into the tumor to fight the cancer.
Our division includes a small team of radiologists with focused expertise in various aspects of breast imaging and intervention. Their experience helps them detect abnormalities on the screening tests, decide whether more testing is needed and contribute in developing the most effective treatment plan.
The rest of our team consists of about 10 technologists, each of whom specializes in mammograms, ultrasounds or MRIs. Thanks to their experience operating our machines, they can make your visit with us as efficient as possible. Equally important, they're here to put you at ease, whether that means answering your questions or holding your hand during a biopsy.
No matter what health challenges you face, you can be sure our radiologists have your best interests in mind. By working closely with medical oncologists, breast surgeons and other professionals at the Tufts MC Breast Health Center, they will do all they can to enable your best chance at recovery. This includes ensuring a smooth transition to the appropriate specialist and helping determine your course of treatment.
Do you offer digital mammography? Yes, we offer digital mammography.
Will a Tufts MC radiologist be present during my breast ultrasound? Most of the time, one of our radiologists will be there and will discuss the results with you following the test.
Will you discuss the results of my biopsy with me? No, either a nurse from radiology or your referring doctor will be discussing results with you.
