Overview

Expert Diagnostic Care for Adults and Children

The Neuroradiology Division at Tufts Medical Center uses advanced technology to detect diseases of the head, brain, neck and spine.

Our services help your referring doctor to understand your medical problem and determine the most effective treatment approach. And because of our proximity to and close relationship with Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts MC, we see both adult and pediatric patients.

Most of our diagnostic work involves magnetic resonance imaging. MRI employs powerful magnets and radio waves to produce high-resolution images of your body's organs and tissues. We are one of the few area hospitals to conduct fetal MRI examinations. In addition, we perform functional MRI (fMRI), MR angiography and perfusion MRI.

Sometimes we use computerized tomography (CT) to make diagnoses. CT scans combine a series of X-rays into a detailed image of a specific body part. We offer all forms of CT scans, including:

  • CT angiography
  • Three-dimensional reconstructions using CT
  • CT profusion of the head, neck and spine

Finally, we also rely on imaging technology to guide invasive diagnostic procedures, such as:

  • Lumbar puncture (spinal tap): inserting a needle into the spinal canal to collect a fluid sample
  • Myelogram: injecting contrast material to take pictures of and detect problems in the spine
  • CT-guided biopsy: using a CT scanner to pinpoint placement of a needle and draw a tissue sample

What matters most, however, aren't the details about our technology or our tests. Rather, it's our dedication to providing an accurate diagnosis that helps you get the treatment you need.

A Real Team Effort

Our division includes four neuroradiologists, each with his or her own areas of focus across adult and/or pediatric neuroradiology. Our doctors often collaborate to review test results and make diagnoses. We regularly meet with colleagues across Tufts MC, including in neurointerventional radiology, for this same purpose. As a result, you or your child will get the expert attention you deserve.

Patients who are diagnosed with tumors of the head, brain, neck and spine require specialized treatment. In these cases, you can take comfort in knowing we have close relationships with Tufts MC neurosurgeons and neurologists. We'll work together to design and carry out a personalized treatment plan for you or your child.

Meet Bea Young, Our Chief MRI Technologist

Chief MRI Technologist Bea Young is a face known to many of our patients. She has extensive experience with both MRIs and CT scans, and has worked with adult and pediatric patients at Tufts MC since 1978.

Bea and the rest of our technologists take pride in keeping you or your child comfortable, whether that means answering a question about the test or providing a blanket for warmth. In fact, most of our technologists are trained in Comfort Talk, a form of therapy we use to make patients feel relaxed and safe.

When it comes to MRIs and other diagnostic tests, experience in reading results really matters. Our skilled technologists work side by side with our radiologists to ensure you enjoy the best possible experience and receive the most accurate diagnosis.
