Surgery Research

Welcome to the research website of the Department of Surgery at Tufts Medical Center and the Tufts University School of Medicine.

In addition to providing outstanding clinical care, our department is strongly committed to conducting surgical research to improve understanding of surgical diseases and advance patient care. The research projects we pursue cover the entire spectrum of clinical activities within our Department, as outlined by division in the research registry to the right. Our department has the expertise, facilities, and environment to conduct research in both the basic and the clinical sciences.

Our campus, shared with hundreds of Tufts University School of Medicine and Tufts Sackler School of Biomedical Sciences researchers, is an ideal environment for the development of research collaborations.

In line with our philosophy of combining clinical and research work, Tufts surgical residents are required to participate in research projects, though we do not require time off for research. For residents especially interested in research, we offer the option of one or more research years, usually between the PGY-3 and PGY-4 years. We believe that exposure to surgical research and scholarship is key in the training and maturation of modern surgical leaders.
