Urology

Kidney Stone Center

The Kidney Stone Center at Tufts Medical Center in downtown Boston, MA provides comprehensive care for adults and children with kidney, ureteral and bladder stones.

A team of urologists, nephrologists, interventional radiologists, endocrinologists, dieticians and support staff offers state-of-the-art urologic treatment for acute urinary stones, and evaluation and counseling to prevent recurrence.

Treatment options include minimally invasive options for stone removal, including shock-wave lithotripsy (SWL), endoscopic, ureteroscopic and percutaneous removal of stones from the kidney, ureter and bladder, as well as laparoscopic nephrolithotomy.

Specially trained interventional radiologists offer a full range of non-surgical options for the retrieval of stones. Nephrologists manage the metabolic and preventive aspects of our comprehensive treatment strategy.

Patients undergo a metabolic evaluation to identify risk factors that predispose to stone formation and receive recommendations to prevent recurrent stones. Individualized lifestyle and nutrition counseling is provided by a dietitian at the Frances Stern Nutrition Center.
