There are a number of surgical weight loss options that you may be considering. It is important to learn more about these options and determine if you are a good candidate for weight loss surgery.
You may be a candidate for weight loss surgery if you:
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or higher
- Are more than 100 pounds overweight
- Are at least 18 years of age (due to insurance eligibility reasons)
- Are experiencing health problems linked to obesity (high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or cholesterol)
- Have previously tried other ways to lose weight without success
Although you might be a good candidate for weight loss surgery, that doesn’t always mean that surgery is the right option for you. Below are common questions that we receive from patients who are thinking about undergoing weight loss surgery:
When is it appropriate to start considering weight loss surgery?
You might consider having weight loss surgery if you have previously tried every other method to lose weight without success. Also, surgery may be an option when these weight loss methods have not worked and your weight is affecting your general health and everyday life.
Will my insurance cover weight loss surgery?
Many health insurance plans cover weight loss surgery. To check on your specific plan, call your health insurance company and ask about your coverage. If you don’t have a policy that includes coverage for weight loss surgery, the Weight and Wellness Center accepts Carecredit.
Will losing weight after surgery help improve my other health issues?
Yes. Significant weight loss can help reduce a number of health issues including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.
How long do I have to stay in the hospital after weight loss surgery?
Your hospital stay varies on the type of weight loss surgery procedure that you receive. The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band often includes an overnight stay. The hospital stay is one to two days for a laparoscopic gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. An open gastric bypass usually requires a two-day hospital stay.
