The vertical sleeve gastrectomy or the “sleeve” for short is a newer operation that is performed laparoscopically through small incisions.
During the procedure, your surgeon will permanently remove the outer aspect of the stomach known as the fundus (roughly 2/3rds), turning the remaining stomach into a banana shaped tube. This procedure is non-reversible.

Advantages of vertical sleeve gastrectomy
Some of the advantages achieved with a sleeve gastrectomy include:
- Laparoscopic procedure so there is a lower risk of complications and a shorter hospital stay
- Lower risk of malabsorption (this procedure doesn't bypass the small intestine)
- No need to come back to the Medical Center for adjustments (as you would with a gastric band).
