Volunteer Services

Patient services

Volunteers at Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children in Boston visit inpatients daily helping with non-medical support services. For example, our volunteers bring complimentary newspapers, magazines, books, puzzles, playing cards and games to patients and their families.

If you are a patient and are trying to reach volunteer services, please call 617-636-1377, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.

Volunteering

The role of the Tufts Medical Center Volunteer is to help provide a positive hospital experience for patients and their families. They serve in a number of capacities including:

  • Visiting with patients and their families
  • Providing administrative support
  • Assisting in the Emergency Room
  • Providing wayfinding assistance through our ambassador program
  • Escorting patients
  • Assisting with discharges
We are looking for long term volunteers that have the time to give and the desire to give back.

Are you interested in becoming a Tufts Medical Center volunteer?

At Tufts MC and Floating Hospital for Children, we match volunteers with opportunities that best suit their skills and interests with the needs of the various departments we serve.

We ask that our volunteers commit to at least one shift per week and at least 40 hours of total service. Most of our volunteer assignments are for the mornings and afternoons, Monday through Friday. We do have a limited number of evening and weekend opportunities.

High school program

High school students can apply, in person only, in September. They have to be at least 16 years old, commit for the school year, and be able to volunteer during weekdays, after school between 3 and 5.

A summer program starts the first full week in July and lasts through August. Summer volunteers commit to one day per week and all assignments start in the morning. High School volunteers need only to show evidence of a recent TB screening.

College program

Because of the large number of college students that apply and the limited number of placement opportunities, we ask for a minimum commitment of two or more semesters of service. We accept applications in September and May.
