Gastrointestinal Cancers Program

Advanced Care for Gastrointestinal Cancers

At the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, we take a team approach to caring for tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Our doctors' expertise spans areas such as surgery, medical oncology, genetics, gastroenterology and interventional radiology. We meet regularly to review each patient's evaluation and unique treatment plan, so you can rest assured you're receiving advanced, personalized care.

Our team provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for all cancers of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, including:

  • Esophageal cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer

What Treatments Are Available for Me?

Effective treatment for gastrointestinal cancers often requires a combination of therapies. Your care team will work with you and your family to find the right care plan for your cancer type, lifestyle and health history.

Treatment options include:

  • Traditional surgery
  • Minimally invasive surgery (e.g. laparoscopy, robotic surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery)
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy

Tufts MC is one of the area's few cancer centers to offer hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for patients whose cancer has spread to the lining of the abdomen. During the HIPEC procedure, surgeons remove all visible tumors and then circulate heated chemotherapy agents throughout the abdominal cavity. HIPEC has been shown to improve both overall survival rates and quality of life.

Our patients also have access to novel therapies through participation in Tufts MC and national clinical trials.
