Applications to the Program are invited from physicians who have completed an accredited three-year residency program in internal medicine in the United States. All applications are to be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service.
The program will consider qualified applicants with J-1 visa sponsorship through ECFMG. Other types of visas (e.g. H1-B) are considered on a case-by-case basis.
A complete application is composed of the following:
- An application through ERAS
- Three letters of recommendations, including one from the Director of the Internal Medicine Training Program and one from an Endocrinology physician that knows the applicant well. In the evaluation process, we place more emphasis on letters from people who know the applicant well vs. from highly ranked staff. A fourth letter can be submitted but only if it contributes something different. Not infrequently, a fourth letter may not add value to the other three recommendation letters and adds 'noise' to the application.
- Scores from the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3.
Incomplete applications (e.g., with only 2 letters of recommendations) will not be reviewed.

Selection process
At the end of July, (within 2-3 weeks after ERAS opens), all completed applications are reviewed by the Program Director and Associate Program Director. Qualified applications are distributed for detailed review among the core faculty who will participate in the selection process for the given year. Applications are assigned to the most appropriate faculty member based on the applicant's specific interests in endocrinology.
To facilitate the review process, all requested information must be available for review before the end of July.
Interviews
The Program receives over 200 applications per year and offers interviews to only a handful of applicants.
Based on a holistic review of the application anchored on attributes that make for a great physician, competencies, experience and metrics, each faculty provides a numerical score for each application that indicates a good match for the Program. The applicants with the highest scores are invited for an interview.
Applicants can expect to receive their invitation for an interview within 4-6 weeks after complete ERAS applications become available. The invitation will typically be sent by the end of August.
The visit + the interview
Traditionally, the visit and interviews were in-person. The COVID-19 pandemic transformed the visit experience into a virtual visit, and interviews are being conducted remotely. We have learned that most candidates prefer to do the "visit" and interviews remotely, but would also like to have an option for an in-person visit before they make a decision. Every cycle, the Program evaluates how the visit and interviews will be conducted based on candidates' preferences and national recommendations by AAMC and ACGME.
For the application cycle that starts in July 2024 (for fellows starting in July 2025), the visit and interviews will be conducted remotely for all applicants (including local applicants) to ensure a unified method.
Interviews are on Friday afternoons from 12 pm – 4:30 pm in September and October.
In person visits following the interview are permitted; however, such visits (and their outcomes) are not considered in the decision making process of the selection committee. The applicants who visit may speak to the fellows but will not interact with members of the selection committee.
The interview serves as an opportunity for both the Program Faculty and the applicant to evaluate each other. During the interview, applicants are evaluated on the basis of their interest and aptitude for a career in endocrinology, professionalism, maturity, communication skills, and their motivation in pursuing research and other scholarly interests.
- Applicants who accept the invitation will "visit" on a Friday, starting at noon.
- The PD or APD welcomes the candidates and provides an overview of the Program via a slide presentation.
- Then, the applicants will have interviews by the PD, APD and 3-4 other key Faculty members (up to 6 interviews for each interviewee).
- At the conclusion of the interviews, the applicants meet with at least one current fellow in the virtual setting, where the applicants have the opportunity to discuss issues that may not be comfortable discussing during the formal interview with the faculty.
