Infectious Diseases Fellowship – How to Apply

To apply
  1. Register with both ERAS and NRMP
  2. Upload the following to ERAS (all at once, ideally):
    • Two or 3 letters of recommendation from people directly involved in your clinical training. One letter should be from your residency program director. The second letter should be from a faculty member who can adequately assess your performance and growth to date. This does not necessarily need to be from an infectious disease specialist, but it can be.
    • Curriculum vitae
    • USMLE scores
    • Personal statement, which should describe:
      1. The basis for your interest in infectious disease.
      2. Any previous research experience and current specific research interest.
      3. Your career goals in medicine and infectious disease.
      4. The characteristics of an infectious disease training program that would suit your needs and goals. 
    • ECFMG scores (if applicable)
    • Citizenship/visa status should be appropriately filled out in ERAS
    • Optional items for ERAS:
      • Fourth letter of recommendation from a research mentor
      • Medical school dean’s letter
      • Medical school transcript 
         
Important calendar dates – for the fellowship beginning July 1, 2023
  • ERAS begins accepting applications July 1, 2023. However fellowship programs cannot review these until mid-July 2023.
  • We interview from September through November 2023.
  • For fellowships beginning July 2024, interviews will be virtual, via Zoom teleconferencing. Consistent with guidance from the Infectious Diseases Society of American, in the interest of encouraging social distancing measures, on-site visits will not be offered, and all interviews will be conducted by teleconference. On-site "second looks" are neither required nor recommended. Depending on pandemic activity and changing local regulations, we may not be able to accommodate on-site visits at certain times, if at all.
  • We will accept applications through the interview season until October 2023.
  • Match Day is November 29, 2023.
  • If an applicant is invited for an interview, we will email an invitation via the ERAS post office with several interview dates. The applicant will need to reply back via email with 3 of the dates in order of preference.

Eligibility

Candidates should complete a 3-year internal medicine residency or its equivalent before entering the fellowship training program. Graduates of non-ACGME accredited (i.e., international) programs are considered and invited based on exceptional achievement. All candidates are invited to apply through ERAS.

Physicians who are planning a career in clinical or laboratory-based research can enter the program after 2 years of internal medicine training as described by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Research Path. In this case, to meet ABIM requirements for internal medicine and infectious diseases, 1 year of clinical training and 3 years of research in infectious disease must be completed after 2 years of internal medicine residency training.

What you can expect on interview day

Please review online materials prior to your interview day. These links will be sent to you when scheduling your interviews. These take the place of what would have been our usual morning introduction session.

You will be scheduled for approximately 2 interviews with faculty. 

Additionally, you will be invited to participate in our weekly case conference, a virtual meet and greet with our fellows and a brief wrap-up session with the program director.
