Inpatient Psychiatry

An approach to mental health marked by compassion and experience

Sometimes patients may require closer attention to their psychiatric illness than we can offer on an outpatient basis. For these patients, Tufts Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry offers a 20-bed inpatient psychiatric unit led by psychiatrists with extensive inpatient care experience and staffed by an experienced team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and occupational therapists.  Our downtown Boston inpatient unit provides comprehensive, compassionate medical and psychiatric evaluation and treatment of psychiatric disorders, including severe depression, mania and psychosis.

Access to the complete range of therapeutic resources

In addition to receiving leading-edge medical and psychopharmacologic treatment, including care as needed by other physicians from Tufts Medical Center, patients can expect to participate in both daily supportive individual psychotherapy and group therapy with our team of skilled clinicians. As staff of an academic medical center, we are well-versed in the latest, state-of-the-art therapies.

For eligible patients, we also offer electroconvulsive therapy. And because of our location within Tufts Medical Center in Boston, we are able to provide psychiatric inpatients with ongoing physical conditions access to the full range of medical services at the hospital as well.

If patients require further psychiatric care after their stay, we can refer them to day programs and other resources within their community, or outpatient care at Tufts. We provide consultation to primary care or specialty physicians, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, psychologists and social workers or other community based programs regarding the care of their patients.
