General Surgery + Surgical Oncology Research

Overview

The researchers in the Divisions of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology are focused on finding new was to prevent, diagnose and treat surgical disease. Our cancer studies are focused on cancer stem cell growth, pancreatic cancer clinical trials, breast cancer imaging and more. Our general surgery studies are focused on examining techniques for teaching minimally invasive surgery and classifying pancreatic disease.

Current research

Current research projects include:

  1. Cancer stem cells and the risk of recurrence.
  2. A Phase I Trial of Continuous Low-Irradiance Photodynamic Therapy (CLIPT) for Patients Failing Radiation Therapy.
  3. The Stroma as a Gatekeeper of Malignant Transformation.
  4. Cyclophosphamide and Docetaxel Every Three Weeks as Neoadjuvant Therapy in Locally Advanced Breast Cancer – A Collaborative Trial
  5. Outcomes and change of practice in patients with peritoneal and pleural based malignancies utilizing a clinical database.
  6. Working with medical oncology and collaborative groups on pancreatic cancer trials.
  7. Near-Infrared Spectral Imaging of the Breast for Cancer Detection and Monitoring.
  8. A Novel Therapy for the Treatment of Chest Wall Progression of Breast Cancer.
  9. Benign Ultrasound-Guided Core Biopsy with Discordant Ultrasound Features.  Is Excision Necessary?
  10. Microwave Thermography (Oncoscan) as an Adjunct to Standard Breast Imaging.
  11. A Randomized Study to Prevent Lymphedema in Women Treated for Breast Cancer.
  12. Thermal Characterization of Breast Tumors by Oncoscan.
  13. Sentinel Node Biopsy in the Management of Breast Cancer.
  14. Evaluation of Models for Teaching Residents in Minimally Invasive Surgery.
