Before we can recommend the best treatment for you, we need to know more about your condition. When you first come to the Vein Center, you will have a clinical examination for vascular disease by an experienced, board certified vascular surgeon.
You will also undergo a non-invasive evaluation duplex ultrasound. This advanced ultrasound shows the vein, its valves and how the blood flows through them, revealing the structures that need to be corrected. The diagnostic value of this non-invasive technique has been validated in numerous studies, many of which were conducted and published by the members of our Vein Center.

When the valves of the great saphenous vein in the thigh do not close properly, blood flows in the wrong direction, leading to high blood pressure in the veins. The increased flow of blood causes these veins and their branches to dilate, creating varicose veins. Varicose veins may lead to aching pain, throbbing and discomfort. They can also cause more serious problems including skin ulcers or deep vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot in a deeper vein.
The Vein Center at Tufts Medical Center offers a new incision-less percutaneous approach to treat varicose veins. We use lasers to obliterate the saphenous vein (the major vein in your thigh), causing it to shrink. This technique avoids the sometimes painful bruising and groin incisions associated with ligation & stripping, the standard approach, which may cause a week or two of disability. With the new "band aid" technique, patients may get back to work the next day, with many of the small dilated branches of this vein returning to normal. If they do not seem to be healing, they can be removed by subsequent microsurgery or sclerotherapy in the office.
Venous ulcers form after a blockage in the leg reduces blood flow and causes high pressure within the veins. To treat venous ulcers, our team has used our extensive experience to develop several important techniques that are being used across the country.
We typically use a stent to open up the narrowed or occluded veins, similar to the technique used in blocked heart vessels. This technique helps venous ulcers to heal and can be performed under local anesthesia.
Spider Veins are treated at our Cosmetic Dermatology Center, which as treated hundreds of patients since opening in 2010. You do not need a physician referral to come here for treatment, and we can quickly set up an appointment for you.

Pelvic Venous Syndrome is a condition characterized by abdominal pain that is worsened with menses and sexual relations. This problem is due to malfunctioning valves in the veins around the uterus and ovaries. Our physicians have the expertise needed to treat this complex condition. In order to relieve the symptoms of pelvic congestion, the malfunctioning veins are blocked using a catheter technique that is performed under local anesthesia.
