Vascular Surgery Fellowship

The Vascular Surgery Fellowship is a two-year program that is fully accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

About this program

Having been one of the founding 11 programs in 1984, we have been in continuous operation since then, with every graduate having achieved certification in the specialty of vascular surgery.

Our graduates have taken many paths; some have filled leadership positions in academic institutions throughout the country, serving as officers in vascular surgical societies and advancing the field as principle investigators and authors on various basic science and clinical research initiatives. Many others have provided years of dedicated service to their patients in community or rural hospitals, bringing state of the art vascular care where it is needed.

This two year program provides a continuous and seamless educational experience. This is a classic “5+2” program, thus all entering fellows have completed an accredited general surgery residency.

The first year of fellowship incorporates formal training in both noninvasive vascular laboratory technology and interventional radiology. This training meets the requirements for the fellow’s application to take the RVT or RPVI examination. The second year is a concentrated experience in traditional vascular surgery, inpatient and outpatient care, vascular consultations and vascular emergencies.

The first and second year fellows work in concert providing care to all vascular patients in the Medical Center. Tufts Medical Center has a “closed” staff model meaning that all of the vascular surgeons are full time faculty dedicated to excellence in patient care and education. There is no non-teaching vascular service at Tufts MC! Fellows learn and provide care to our patients in ambulatory clinics, outpatient surgical suites, inpatient floors, intensive care units, IR suites and a state of the art hybrid OR suite.

Clinical opportunities

The clinical experience provides broad exposure to clinical vascular surgery. Our fellows gain experience in the examination and evaluation of vascular patients on the wards and in outpatient clinics. While this experience is important, our program strongly emphasizes the importance of operative experience.

The vascular fellows generally graduate with 800-900 open and endovascular cases. There is a robust and well-balanced case distribution including carotid, infrainguinal occlusive disease, venous and aortic reconstruction. This is combined with a wide experience in more complex cases; including thoracoabdominal aneurysm, mesenteric and renal revascularizations, venous reconstructive surgery, and re-operative surgery in all arterial and venous distributions which produce a comprehensive vascular surgery experience.

Research opportunities

We also offer our fellows ample opportunity to design and perform retrospective as well as prospective clinical studies. In addition for fellows with interests in basic and translational sciences there is ample support and encouragement to do so. The Division maintains a molecular and cellular laboratory and fosters close collaborations with scientists throughout Tufts University. Most fellows have presented their work at regional and national meetings and publish their results in prestigious surgical journals.

Conferences + lectures

Our fellows are expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of vascular surgery both during and after training. The vascular fellow plays a fundamental role in the education of general surgery residents and medical students. These academic endeavors are pursued in parallel with the clinical duties of the program. The ability to multitask and organize ones day are developed and rewarded. The academic program is anchored by a number of teaching conferences which include a weekly multidisciplinary vascular case conference, Cardiovascular Morbidity and mortality conferences, grand rounds, Journal clubs, text book reviews, exam question reviews and more.
