Overview

Principal Investigator: Maher Ghamloush, MD

While much has been learned about the acute phase of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the last year, little is known about the recovery phase. There have recently been several reports in the news and in the medical literature about a prolonged recovery phase after developing acute COVID-19 in some individuals who may have persistent symptoms many months after infection, developing the so called “long COVID”. The goal of the proposed study is to determine the underlying cause of impairment in patients who have recovered from COVID-19 but who continue to have symptoms at least 3 months after infection.

Study details

Inclusion Criteria
  • Documented History of COVID-19
  • Persistent symptoms of chronic fatigue, breathlessness, or inability to exercise
  • Initial workup by physicians does not identify a clear cause of above symptoms
Exclusion Criteria
  • Major pre-existing heart, lung, muscle, kidney, liver, or neurologic disease
  • Active cancer
  • Recent injections, surgery, or injury
Study Requirements

Study participants will be asked to complete online questionnaires, take a blood test, and possibly a breathing test. Some of the participants will have all the blood test taken during a regularly scheduled exercise test. Duration of involvement in the study will be 30-75 minutes, which includes the online questionnaires and 1 visit to Tufts Medical Center during which the blood draw will be performed. A total of 1 teaspoon of blood is required for this study. Some of the participants may be asked to complete an online questionnaire 3 months after initial participation.
