For decades, it’s been known that poor nutrition during pregnancy has negative impacts on maternal and child outcomes both in the short and long term. Unfortunately, due to socioeconomic and food access issues, likely secondary to structural racism in populations of color, nutrition in pregnancy is also an issue of health equity.

Perrie O’Tierney-Ginn, PhD is the Executive Director of the MIRI, and Research Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Tufts University School of Medicine and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy at Tufts University.

The Mother Infant Research Institute (MIRI) uses a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach with an intergenerational lens to improve the health of mothers and babies.

The Women’s CV Health Research Group brings together basic scientists from the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute (MCRI) with scientists, clinician investigators and population researchers from diverse Departments at Tufts Medical Center including Internal Medicine, the Mother Infant Research Institute (MIRI), Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics with the Tufts Freidman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Tufts University School of Medicine and School of Public Health, and the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) with common interests in studying the unique aspects of Women’s Cardiovascular Health.

The Department of Medicine is home to a wide variety of clinical and basic research programs.

We conduct research to improve maternal and child health from preconception through childhood. Our research supports healthier moms and babies.

We offer 41 programs accredited by the ACGME. Our GME programs include 19 specialty ACGME accredited residency programs and a number of subspecialty and fellowship information.
