Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Coronary artery bypass surgery (sometimes called coronary artery bypass grafting or CABG) improves the blood flow from your heart to your body. With an artery or vein graft, we can bypass the blocked sections of your arteries and increase the blood supply to your heart.

Heart health for a healthier you

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease in the United States. It’s also one of the most serious. That’s because this disease develops over time and often goes unnoticed until severe symptoms show up.

Our expert teams won’t miss a beat when it comes to helping you prevent, detect and treat CAD. You can lower your risk factors for CAD by making heart healthy lifestyle choices like regular exercise and a healthy diet. And should your condition require more advanced care, coronary artery bypass surgery can help your heart pump blood to the rest of your body.

Conditions

Coronary artery disease (CAD) affects your arteries, also known as the blood vessels that carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. This condition causes your arteries to harden and narrow, making it difficult for blood to flow through them.

Testing

Your primary care doctor may refer you to see one of our cardiovascular specialists if they suspect you're living with heart disease. We’ll perform a series of tests to confirm if it’s safe for you to undergo this surgery or if you need this surgery at all, including:

Once a diagnosis has been made, your cardiologist will discuss your treatment options with you and will recommend the best course for treatment.

Treatments

Our cardiovascular team may recommend surgery when other approaches like lifestyle changes or medications, don't improve your condition. We’ll use our expertise in minimally invasive and open heart surgery techniques to design a treatment plan just for you.

There 2 two methods we can use to perform CABG:

  • Off-pump CABG surgery: We won’t use a heart-lung bypass machine during your operation, which allows your heart to continue pumping blood while your surgeon operates on it.
  • On-pump CABG surgery: We’ll connect your heart to a heart-lung bypass machine, which pumps blood to the rest of your body while your surgeon operates on your heart.

Talk with your doctor about your options and if a CABG is the right procedure for your heart health.

Endoscopic harvesting

In both on-pump and off-pump CABG surgeries, we can take segments of a blood vessel from your legs or arms and use these to bypass blockages in your coronary arteries. This minimally invasive technique is called endoscopic harvesting. It’s like taking a shortcut to drive around a major roadblock.

Multiple arterial conduits

Our surgeons are experts at utilizing multiple arterial conduits for your bypass surgery, a technique that has been shown to increase quality of life and reduce blockages in your blood vessels. In fact, our surgeons’ use of multiple arterial conduits in CABG surgery is significantly higher than the national average
