Our Gastroenterology + Hepatology Division team is highly experienced in treating gastrointestinal disorders and liver diseases, and we are dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of these conditions through our research and clinical programs. We are proud to offer a wide range of services, including:

Since its founding in the 1960s, our division has earned recognition for excellence in patient care and research. And then in the 1970s, we were widely recognized for our management of primary biliary cirrhosis and sclerosing cholangitis. In the following decade, we were one of the first recipients of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant, which led to groundbreaking research into digestive diseases at Tufts Medical Center (Tufts MC) and affiliated entities.

We provide a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient therapies and treatments for all types of gastrointestinal disorders and liver diseases, and our team works closely with dietitians, colon and rectal surgeons, infectious disease specialists, and other Tufts MC colleagues to ensure that your care is well-managed and personalized. Additionally, we are proud to offer a specialized unit exclusively for patients with gastrointestinal disorders, staffed by doctors and nurses with subspecialty expertise in these conditions.

Department research

As was the case 5 decades ago, the Gastroenterology + Hepatology Division has a strong research focus. Many of our faculty members are active in basic, clinical and translational research in inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology and allergies. Our GRASP Digestive Core Center, a major research center, has received continuous support from the NIH for 24 years and is among a few NIH-funded centers in the country.

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology's research mission is to advance the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of digestive tract, liver and pancreas diseases. Collaboration with the HNRCA and the NIH-funded Clinical + Translational Research Center enables us to discover the underlying mechanisms of gastrointestinal and liver diseases and develop new treatment approaches.

Training + Education

We train individuals for clinical practice or an academic career in the field of gastroenterology or hepatology. Our fellows gain extensive experience in managing acute gastrointestinal bleeding, acute and chronic gastrointestinal diseases, liver disease and endoscopy. As part of our educational mission, we also\ train residents, postdoctoral research fellows and medical students.
Residencies + fellowships

Our Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is ACGME-accredited and trains 2-3 fellows annually for academic careers in gastroenterology and hepatology. The program is flexible and designed to provide training in core clinical areas, including extensive expertise in managing liver disease, GI bleeding, acute/chronic GI diseases and endoscopy. 

Fellows can develop advanced procedural skills in ERCP, EUS, endoscopic mucosal resection and balloon enteroscopy. The program is a collaboration between Tufts MC, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, and MetroWest Medical Center, providing an outstanding opportunity for growth and development under a single fellowship program.
