Tufts Medical Center's Department of Surgery provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for patients with surgical illness. Our mission is to provide truly expert and compassionate care to every patient through a wide range of multidisciplinary programs for cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease and complex wounds.
Innovative Techniques and Facilities Mean Better Patient Outcomes
We use world-class operating suites equipped for the most sophisticated surgical procedures including minimally invasive laparoscopic gastric bypass, endovascular aneurysm repair, robotic procedures and the full spectrum of video-assisted and image guided procedures. We are a leader in minimally invasive surgery, which allows patients to return to normal daily activities with a shorter recovery time.
Our pre-operative and post-operative care facilities including our Center for Pre-operative Assessment, our Post-anesthesia Care Unit and our Surgical Intensive Care Unit are staffed by dedicated anesthesia, surgery and nursing professionals dedicated to insuring a safe and comfortable procedure and recovery.
Training Tomorrow’s Surgical Leaders
We take pride in our fully accredited programs that train surgeons who will go on to be leaders in surgical care and research. Because Tufts Medical Center is the principal teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine, each of our surgeons has a faculty appointment and is active in clinical teaching.
We offer a five-year, comprehensive General Surgery residency program as well as advanced training programs in Vascular Surgery, Bariatric Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. In all of our programs, we emphasize the importance of gaining operative experience with a diverse case load while maintaining a commitment to advancing surgical research.
Breakthroughs in Surgical Research
We have several active and innovative research programs creating exciting new breakthroughs in pancreatic diseases, childhood cancer and trauma.
In addition, we are currently developing new treatments for cancer, obesity, and colorectal diseases. We run a Surgical Research Laboratory fully equipped for testing new minimally invasive technologies, potentially life-saving cardiovascular support devices, and other novel surgical devices.
